My major is Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Print and Photo Media and a minor in both art history and English with a Journalism emphasis. So in the spring of 2008, I will be taking:
1.) ARTS 279 Fundamentals of Digital Art
2.) ARTS 203 Three Dimensional Design
3.) ARTH 314 Northern Renaissance Art History
4.) ARTS 304 Color (lots of painting, prerequisite for studio painting)
5.) ENGL 144 American Literature
I have to take American literature before I can actually begin my 300/400 level courses for the English minor. This minor, and my art history minor will satisfy the requirements for my upper division credits.
As you can see, I still haven't started photography class yet because I couldn't register in time before it was full. There are only 2 classes available and they only accept 15 people each. Juniors and seniors always get to register prior to me, so therefore they get the advantage.
I was undecided my first year in college, first thinking I would like to do international business with my interest in foreign languages and communication. I changed my major to fine arts after taking several math courses for civil engineering, which was what I thought I wanted to do after changing my mind from intl business. I learned that I disliked the technical aspects of engineering, and rather I was more interested in the artistic sides which led me into architecture. From there, I declared myself with a concentration in sculpture and metalsmithing, hoping to get enough background in 3D design for that sort of work. I found out that was also not what I ultimately wanted to do in the future, especially after taking calculus. In order to continue down the same path, I perhaps thought I wanted to eventually major in industrial design, but that sort of work did not click with me either.
Recently, this summer I experimented with digital photography, and I think I really found my vocation, my aspiration, my true ambition. I knew it was going to take me a long time to figure out what I wanted to do and I am lucky that I found it. I could tell before that I was uncertain about my future, but I kept lying to myself.
I feel that photojournalism is the ultimate career for me. This sort of photography is what I was immediately drawn to and I feel it is special for the fact that it tells a story, more importantly an extremely powerful message. The notion of entering this field of work is exhilarating and I am truly excited about it. I actually feel happy for once about the choice I have made and look forward to my future endeavors.
